There’s nothing quite like an early 70s MGB roadster. They hold the perfect mix between 60s sportscar design and the refinements of the later cars. These cars are a fantastic investment, with prices rising healthily all of the time.
This Damask Red car is no exception, and I feel you’ll struggle to find a better one for this price. It’s had a great deal of work during its life. With only 4 owners from new (two of which were in the same family), it’s unusual to see a car which retains its sense of originality so nicely.
The car was stored off the road for a number of years and was subject to a full restoration in 2014/2015. Since then, it hasn’t covered a great deal of miles and has been well cared for and received anything that it’s required.
The restoration was very comprehensive and included:
• Full bodywork restoration including replacement front wings, new outer sills, castle rails, rear quarters and much more!
• Full professional repaint in original Damask Red – finished to a very nice standard
• New Minilite style wheels with polished rims, and new tyres
• GAZ rear shocks, along with brake and suspension overhaul
• Carbs recently rebalanced and retuned, and timing reset
• New seat foams and covers
• New carpet set
• 12v battery conversion fitted
• ..and much, much more!
Bodily, the car is nice and straight, with no evidence of filler. The doors shut with a nice ‘clunk’ and the gaps are really excellent for an MGB. The panel work is very solid and I’m sure it will last for years to come without any major issues. Door and wing bottoms are excellent, as are the wing-top seams, and scuttle panel. The paint finish is very good (clearly professional, with all trim and windscreen removed), and has an excellent shine. As you can see in the pictures – it presents very well indeed! As I mentioned, new Minilite wheels have been fitted and shod with Uniroyal tyres. A spare wheel is included, but not pictured. The chromework on the car is pretty good, with minor pitting, and the car is fitted with the correct ‘honeycombe’ Grille opinion.
The car appears to be very solid throughout. Sills, castle sections, floorpans, chassis legs and spring hangers are all in good order, and the car is free from nasty patchwork-quilt type repairs. The current MOT expires in August 2018, and of course, with the newly introduced DVLA rules, the car will not require another MOT test!
The interior is fine fettle. The seats are in good order, having been recovered and fitted with new foams. A good quality carpet set has been fitted, and the door cards and dashboard are in good order. The hood frame is in great, and the hood itself appears is watertight and is in good condition, complete with zip-out rear window. A hood cover is also included in the sale.
The engine starts readily and runs well, ticking over as it should. It doesn’t seem to use oil or water, and the compressions are all very strong. You can see in the pictures that the engine bay is tidy (and, body colour) - it could be detailed to make it even better! Exhaust note is lovely thanks to the stainless steel exhaust and the car pulls and drives as it should. Oil pressure is spot-on, and the car does not overheat. Overdrive is fitted, and functions very well. The rear axle is nice and quiet and the gearbox has no synchromesh issues.
I have the current V5 document and MOT, along with a couple of bills and receipts for the past few years – sadly there isn’t much there in the way of history as the previous owner was in the process of moving house. There are some receipts before it came off the road in the early 2000s, showing that the car had only covered 26,000 miles – the previous owner knew the former keepers and this is allegedly correct, but I will let you decide for yourself! Judging by the state of the structure, I’d say this could very well be true – but no guarantee!
All in all, this is an absolutely stunning little car that is absolutely ready to be used and enjoyed. You won’t find many cars at this price that have been finished to this standard. I travel all over the country to view these cars and this one is particularly good for the money I’m asking.
