There’s nothing quite like an early 70s MGB GT. The perfect mix between 60s sportscar design and the refinements of the later cars. These cars are a fantastic investment, with prices dramatically rising all of the time.
This particular car is no exception, and I feel you’ll struggle to find a better one for this price. Having been subject to a major restoration in the 1980s, the car was then stored until 2009 and then subject to a major recommissioning.
Since then, car has been meticulously kept in the highest order. This history is supported with a folder full of bills and receipts which account for the restoration work that has been undertaken. The car is MOTd until December 2017 (and will become MOT exempt next May, thanks to the newly introduced DVLA rules!), but a fresh 12 months MOT could be negotiated with any interested buyer.
There is far too much to list here; but works over recent years include:
• Full cosmetic restoration and professional respray in the car’s original colour, Bronze Yellow
• Original MGB V8 wheels professionally refurbished and fitted with new tyres (these wheels alone are worth in excess of £1200, if you look online!)
• New interior fitted (leather seats, new carpets etc)
• Underside carefully inspected and re-undersealed
• Carburettors professionally overhauled at a cost of £400
• All front and rear suspension completely renewed, and telescopic shock absorbers fitted all round
• Electronic ignition fitted
• New starter motor
• New heater core, along with new coolant hoses all round
• All new brake pipes, cylinders, servo fitted
• New fuel tank and new fuel lines throughout
• New batteries
• Halogen headlamp conversion
• …the list just goes on and on!
The above only scrapes the surface of what’s been done. If you’re after a well-sorted car for touring, this is the car for you. The engine was a BL Silver Seal engine which was fitted in the 1980s and has covered just 11,000 miles. It is incredibly smooth and excellent in stop-start traffic. The ‘feel’ of the car, both in terms of build quality and the way that the car drives, clearly shows that the standard of work carried out has been very good indeed.
The car fires up beautifully idles healthily. It pulls strongly and sounds great. It rides particularly well and the servo assisted brakes are also very good! The car is properly soundproofed so doesn’t clatter and bang like so many BGTs do – it’s a really nice thing to drive. Oil pressure is spot-on, and the car does not overheat. Overdrive is fitted, and functions flawlessly. An oil cooler is fitted, along with a spin-on oil filter conversion.
Bodily, the car is very nice indeed. The panel gaps are really excellent - door and wing bottoms are all solid, as are the wing-top seams, and scuttle panel. The car was repainted professionally a few years ago at a cost of £2500, and has a very deep finish and a fantastic shine. It’s not an absolutely concourse job but it’s hard to spot any defects, and the car has absolutely not just had a quick blowover. There are absolutely zero structural issues.
The car is fitted with MGB V8 wheels which are very rare indeed, and sets sell for well in excess of £1200 when they turn up for sale. It makes the car very cheap indeed, when you consider the value of the wheels alone!
The interior is in fantastic order. New seat foams, navy leather covers, new carpets. The dashboard is in very good order, as are the door cards and headlining. The engine bay is very clean and tidy indeed, and with some detailing could be made to look outstanding.
It would take me a great deal of time to detail everything about the car, so do please come and view it and see for yourself.
All in all, this is an absolutely stunning little car that is absolutely ready to be used and enjoyed. You won’t find many cars that have been finished to this standard. I travel all over the country to view these cars and this one is particularly good.
