There’s nothing quite like an early 70s MGB GT. The perfect mix between 60s sportscar design and the refinements of the later cars. These cars are a fantastic investment, with prices dramatically rising all of the time.
This particular car is no exception, and I feel you’ll struggle to find a better one for this price. The car has been meticulously cared for and kept in very good, usable order, having been subject to a restoration a few years ago. It’s MOT’d until June 2018 and the last 5 MOTs have been completely free from advisories.
There is far too much to list here; but works over recent years include:
· Full bodywork restoration to remove all rotten areas, with lots of new panels fitted
· Full professional respray in British Racing Green Metallic, as used on the MG RV8 and MGF. I’m not usually a fan of metallic colours on MGBs, but I must say this one does look very good indeed
· Comprehensive structural restoration - again, any areas needing attention have been replaced.
· Rebuilt Gold Seal Engine, with unleaded cylinder head
· Stainless steel exhaust
· 12v battery conversion
· Full interior refurb, with new carpets, seat foams, dashboard respray, new door cards, etc
· Webasto sunroof which has been recovered and is in excellent order
· New Minilite style wheels which remain in fantastic condition
· Halogen headlamp conversion
The above only scrapes the surface of what’s been done. If you’re after a well-sorted car for, perhaps for long-distance touring, this is the car for you. The engine is incredibly smooth and excellent in stop-start traffic. The ‘feel’ of the car, both in terms of build quality and the way that the car drives, clearly shows that the standard of work carried out has been very good indeed.
The car fires up beautifully idles healthily. It pulls strongly and sounds great. The car rides particularly well and the servo assisted brakes are also very good! The car is properly soundproofed so doesn’t clatter and bang like so many BGTs do – it’s a really nice thing to drive. Oil pressure is spot-on, and the car does not overheat. Overdrive is fitted, and functions flawlessly, switching in very quickly once the switch is engaged. An oil cooler is fitted. The carburettors have recently been rebalanced and retuned, and the timing has been set.
Bodily, the car is very nice indeed. Door and wing bottoms are all solid, as are the wing-top seams, and scuttle panel – totally free from bubbling, despite having been repainted a few years ago. The car has clearly been repainted professionally – it has a very deep finish and a fantastic shine. The metallic ‘flake’ is very discreet and suits the car very well. There is some VERY light microblistering on the bonnet due to being stored under a cover, but I’m being very fussy here. In normal daylight it’s practically impossible to see. I have ordered some Black and Silver registration plates in the correct font.
The interior is in fantastic order. The carpets have been replaced, the seats and door cards are all in good order, and the dashboard is free from paint-flaking. A sliding Webasto/Britax type sunroof has been fitted, which works very nicely and doesn’t leak. The roof material is in as-new condition. The engine bay is clean and tidy, and would detail up very well with a bit of time.
Whilst it’s not a concourse show car, I really feel that you won’t find a better car in this sort of price-bracket. It’s not the usual tarted-up mess. You won’t find many cars that have been finished to this standard - I travel all over the country to view these cars and this one is particularly good.
