1930 MG 'M' Type 12/12 Le Mans Replica SOLD
The ‘M’ Type MG Midget proved an instant success following its introduction in 1929. With a price tag of £185 and a rakish pointed tail, it was remarkable value for money and it quickly established itself in amateur motor sport.
MG built two special ‘M’ Types in 1930 for the Le Mans 24-hour race. These were based on the ‘Double Twelve’ models which won the Team Prize at Brooklands.
Presented for sale here is a faithful replica of the Le Mans car driven by Sir Francis Samuelson. Deserving of close inspection, it is sure delight as the level of build is quite exceptional.
The car was purchased in 1996 as a dismantled chassis with running gear and engine and the restoration commenced in 2010 and was to take three years. The first outing of the completed car was at the Shere hill Climb in September 2013.
The engine was modified by Phil Cornutt and built up in conjunction with Peter Gregory. The modified cylinder head has later rockers and updated camshaft, replacement bottom end castings and Phoenix crankshaft and rods. A new accurate replica body was fitted with all details applicable to the Le Mans Midget.
Since completion the car has been sparingly used and is offered in concours condition. It has a VSCC Buff Form, an RF 60 Log Book dating back to 1955, numerous build details and information on the Le Mans ‘M’ Types. The original registration number of GH 4434 remains with the car.
