- In 1951, Volkswagen introduced a special bus or van with 23 windows and a large fabric sliding sunroof. Initially, these were developed as tour buses for the alps, but they quickly became popular in the U. S. and nicknamed “Samba.” Production continued on the 23-window through 1963.
- In 1964, the 21-window continued production with all Sambas ending by the end of 1966 model year.
- With the popularity of these models and rising prices, there are now more “clones” being made.
- This is in fact a genuine factory 21-window with split front seat walk-through.
- It was built for the U. S. market.
- This VW was built on June 2nd, 1966 and left the factory on June 9th, 1966... It was then delivered to New York.
- It was ordered with the following factory options:
425 North American Equipment/ U. S.
081 Split Front Seats (Walk-Through)
114 6-Pop Out/ Hinged Side Windows
- Originally this Samba was delivered in Sea Blue lower with Cumulus White upper.
- However, during the restoration, the color was changed to the current VW Samba color combination.
- Lou DiAngelo of Rutland, Vermont purchased the bus on June 8th, 1996. He bought it from a younger gal who had it for a while but didn’t do much with it. It needed restoration. She had purchased it from another local owner who had used it for years to pick up local garbage.
- Fortunately, he had coated the entire underside, which protected it nicely. For the next 9-years, Mr. DiAngelo worked on the restoration of this bus. He did most of the work himself.
- He upgraded the electrical system to 12 volt. He said that when he removed the undercoating, the chassis/ body was in decent original condition.
- All the rockers, fender wells, dog legs (lower areas under the front doors), both floors, and front clip were original. He made some repairs around a couple of the jack points as well as repairs in the front floor area where the driver and front passenger feet go. A few patches were done inside the front right fender well. When DiAngelo bought the bus, it had a ’67 beetle motor in it.
- He ended up sourcing a more period correct used motor from John’s Car Corner of Westminster, Vermont (a local VW repair shop still in business today). Towards the end of the restoration, DiAngelo took the bus back to John’s for final inspection and repairs before going through State inspection.
- They repaired the suspension, adjusted the brakes, finished up the wiring, and completed dozens of other minor safety repairs.
- DiAngelo sold this microbus to a physician in Topeka, Kansas on February 27th, 2009.
-This owner kept the bus for the next 5-years. Shortly after purchasing the bus, he realized it needed more work.
- So, he put it on a flatbed and towed it out to Old Speed of Paramount, California.
- This shop is a long-time vintage VW repair and parts shop that’s been around for over 35-years. He worked with Russel to give the bus some significant mechanical upgrades, which included:
Rebuilt single port motor to at least 1600cc
Front disc brake kit from Wolfsburg West
Upgraded master cylinder
IRS suspension conversion with T2 upgrade
All new suspension parts
Freeway flyer transmission
Additional gauge cluster
Oil cooling system with electric fan
Heater
Rebuilt steering box
Tie rod assembly
New seatbelts
New safari windows
-Once completed, he flatbed towed the bus back to Kansas. Unfortunately, due to weather and road conditions, he used it less than he had hoped. He ended up selling it to the current Southern California owner/ collector in January of 2013.
- This current owner is a long-time vintage car enthusiast with a nice collection he stores at a local small airport. Unfortunately, he’s losing some space and he needs to downsize a bit. For the past 7-years, he has enjoyed this bus with his family at local Cars & Coffee events as well as cruising on PCH.
- He serviced this bus regularly with Powerhaus VW in Torrance, California. They confirmed that the engine had recently been rebuilt. Furthermore, the current owner had TransWest rebuild the IRS transmission with welded hubs, steel forks, and better gear ratios. The gear ratio specs are:
1st – 3:80
2nd -2:06
3rd – 1:26
4th – 0:89
R&P: 4:12
- This microbus is in excellent condition for an older restoration and obviously well cared for and garaged.
- The exterior looks great. The paint shines up nicely and was obviously a high-quality paint job at the time.
- There are no signs of rust, bubbles, or other damage. There are just very light signs of use with a hair scratch here and a small chip there. Nothing significant and barely visible.
- I ran a paint meter over all the panels and there appears to be no signs of major filler or other major rust repairs on the body panels. You can still see the factory rivets down the sides of the bus. The panels all look great with decent fitment. Some new rubber moldings were installed in the doors and keep them from closing perfectly.
- All the glass from the side windows and roof windows appear to be original with the correct VW stampings. The safari window glass has recently been replaced.
- The wheels are the correct 14” ones wearing 185 tires that have near full tread but are old and need to be replaced. The front disc brakes are new, and the rear brakes were rebuilt during the restoration.
- The floors look dry with no signs of major rot or corrosion (both from above and below). There are a few small rust spots on the left front part of the lower floor (unique to Sambas) behind the front left wheel (see pics).
- There are also some signs of rust on a couple of the jack points. The front floors have been replaced in two pieces and are dry. The rear fender wells are original and in very good shape.
- The chassis appears pretty dry for being mostly original. There are some small oil leaks around the oil return tubes and will leave a couple drops when sitting.
- The interior is equally as nice and also in great condition considering the age.
- There are no tears or rips on the seat upholstery and it look fresh. The headliner has a few small blemishes and stains, but in general looks good. The rubber mats are in good shape as are the door panels.
- The gauges work properly as do the upgraded oil pressure, tachometer, and oil temp gauges mounted from above. The original clock does not work. An original Sapphire radio is installed, but it’s bypassed with an upgraded sound system that works great.
- A custom center box between the front seats has been installed as a glove box as well as subwoofer.
- It can easily be removed.
- This Samba drives really nice and has surprisingly good road manners.... It starts easily on the first try with no hesitation or smoking and holds an even idle. The power is very responsive.
- The transmission shifts smoothly through all the gears with no grinding or slipping.
- The disc brakes are fantastic and a must for anyone who actually wants to drive these 50+ year-old buses. They have incredible bite with no fading or pulling. The bus drives straight and does not wander. It can easily keep up with modern-day traffic.
- California registration is current through January of 2020.
- This VW comes with an original Certificate of Authenticity from Volkswagen, most service/ build records for the last 20-years, several boxes of misc. parts (see pics), an original pair of 356C Solex dual carburetors, and spare wheel/ tire with cover.
** Note: VIN and other numbers withheld to protect against fraud. All numbers including VIN, Engine, and color will be provided to serious buyers.
