1972 Jaguar E-Type Series 3 V12 OTS RHD (Hardtop) For Sale

In 1971, Jaguar changed their focus from racing to touring and the US-market, the Series 3 was born. Ensuring the E-Type continued to appeal to the states (Jaguar’s biggest buyer), the E-Type was lengthened and given a wider track, power steering was added as well as Jaguar’s brand new 5. 3 litre V12 engine. The Series 3 became known as Jaguar’s grand tourer, offering a powerful and comfortable drive. Staying in tune with the 70s design, flared wheel arches were added and a redesigned enclosed grille along with other subtle changes.

This full matching numbers 1972 Series 3 Jaguar E-Type has just completed a ground up, full nut and bolt restoration, with a number of highly desirable E-Type UK performance upgrades. Currently finished in Primrose Yellow, with a factory hardtop in Black and a fully retrimmed interior by marque specialists. This example is truly the definition of a no-expense spared restoration, with only the best deemed suitable.

Although it is not only the restoration that stands this E-Type out from the crowd, this original 3-owner car has remained in the same family for over forty years. Bought new by Mr. Bothroyd at Robson’s Market Garage in the market town of Bishop Auckland. The original distributor was Appleyard of Harrogate, Yorkshire, one of under 2, 000 right-hand drive examples ever made.

Appleyards was founded in 1919 by Ernest Appleyard and had won the Jaguar franchise in 1935. Being with Jaguar through the times of selling some of the most desirable cars of the era and now the most collectable. By the time this example left the dealership in 1973, Appleyards was a public company and one of Britain’s biggest car retailers.

Rolling out of the forecourt in Co. Durham in 1973 the E-Type was first registered ‘YPT 5L’, the registration that is still associated with the car over 40 years later. Originally finished in White with a Black interior, the car was deemed the ultimate grand tourer of its time. With few production cars able to meet the claimed top speeds and cruising capabilities of the E-Type it was truly the sports car of its day.

The E-Type remained within the Bothroyd family being passed from father to son, with Richard taking ownership of the Series 3, following the passing of his father. The E-Type remained standard and if it wasn’t for an unfortunate incident with the family gardeners car, the car may have never become known to Dick at Carrosserie who was tasked with repairing the damage.

Remaining with the family until 2015, it was then Dick who was tasked with passing this example onto its next custodian. Dick knew just the person, nearing the end of a project, the current owner was ready to build the E-type of his dreams, a lifelong Jaguar enthusiast and with a spare space in the garage for the perfect tourer.

It was at this time that the E-Type entered a full restoration, stripping the car of all componentry and taking it back to bare metal. Amazingly for a British based car for all of its life, there was virtually no rust or metal work required. The car was prepared to the highest standard and finished in the period Jaguar correct colour of Primrose Yellow.

All of this happening while all the necessary mechanical work was undertaken, including and not limited to a full engine strip down and rebuild, a full back axle rebuild, all rebuild hubs and replacement of all necessary and suspect ancillaries.

It was at this time that the owner felt that to make the perfect E-Type the car needed to be subjected to a number of E-Type UK upgrades, these included:

Fuel injection
- 5-Speed gearbox
- Uprated aluminium radiator and header tank
- Samco sports silicone hoses
- Full tubular stainless sports exhaust system

It is an often-overlooked fact that the 5. 3L engine was originally designed to accept fuel injection. The system was being developed by AE Brico at the request of Jaguar, largely due to coming US regulations and exhaust gas regulations. It was only largely due to unreliability and the fact that Bosch had patents on the system that AE Brico were developing that development stopped leaving Jaguar without fuel injection and thus reverting to Zenith-Stromberg carburettors.

Notoriously difficult to tune and suffering with fuel evaporation, E-Type UK have used the system fitted to later XJS but refined, upgraded and leveraging a modern ECU to relieve these issues. Although the owner didn’t stop there, commissioning further reliability upgrades.

Finished in Heritage Certificate correct Black trim, the car presents as an unquestionable example of what a no expense sparred restoration can deliver. This matching numbers car is ready to go and with a 5-speed gearbox and stainless steel exhaust will not disappoint.
