With the 250 engine, Ferrari created a large family of cars that propelled the the marque from small scale production to the status of a large-scale sports car manufacturer, even if the numbers still remained relatively low. This range of cars employed an engine designed by Gioacchino Colombo, a 3-litre V12 unit that proved to be highly versatile and adaptable for road and race use. In 1960, the 250 PF coupé gave way to a new car, the 250 GTE. Also designed by Pinin Farina, this was the first Ferrari to offer four seats. To accommodate this, the engine was positioned 20cm further forward and the body featured a sleeker roofline. Used as a pace car in the 1960 Le Mans 24 Hours, the model was officially launched at the Paris Motor Show in October of that year. The car was an immediate success and by 1964 production had reached nearly 1, 000, helping to build Ferrari's reputation worldwide.
This example is one of the first series 250 GTEs, of which 299 were produced. It was sold new to the US and was still there in August 1984 when it won third prize in the International Ferrari Concours, while in the hands of Don Kinnaird. A description of the car during its sale mentions that it had just two owners in the US before being imported into Europe in the mid-1990s. In 2003, the car was restored in Italy and the current owner acquired it in the Netherlands. The bodywork is sound and the grey paintwork in good condition with the exception of a few minor blemishes, and the alignments and door openings are good. An inspection report from 2018 mentions signs of an older repair in the front wheel arch. Inside, the red leather upholstery with matching carpets has been restored to a high standard, the dashboard is complete and features a period Becker Avus radio. The engine runs well and the 2014 Vredestein tyres display only minor wear. This is a lovely example of the first series, in an elegant colour scheme, presenting the homogenous patina of an older restoration. Following a general check, the car will be ready to set off in style on a grand tour, its original vocation.

May my enemies live long enough to see my success Launched in 1980, the Ferrari Mondial took over from the 308GT4. It had the same V8 engine in the middle, but on a longer wheelbase.
