1973 Norton 850 Commando Interstate Mk2A SOLD

THANK YOU - BUT THIS BIKE IS NOW SOLD,

BUT I HAVE A GORGEOUS, NICELY SORTED AND VERY USABLE SUNBEAM S7 (Rare Early Model) THAT I'VE NOW JUST LISTED FOR SALE (I was a private enthusiast & collector selling my collection).

Norton Commando 850 Interstate Mk2A - 1973

Nut & bolt rebuild and restoration in 2011 with practical upgrades sympathetic to the Norton Commando’s wonderful character. Mr Pete Lovell (ex-Norton race team) greatly assisted me with technical advice. And I have a detailed photographic record and, where applicable, a folder of notes, paperwork and receipts from doing this work.

As a Design Engineer professional I also explored modest customisations (all reversible). The style I sought was of a Norton Commando MkII fastback, with tidied away wiring & brackets (ie. an update of the original 750cc Norton fastback). My own fastback tail is interchangeable with a pillion seat pad, and in ‘touring mode’ the standard Norton dual seat is likewise interchangeable. There are BMW Touring panniers which may be used with any of the three seat configurations (NB. these panniers are included).

Other concessions to practicality include front fork gaiters and an enclosed chain case, vernier Isolaatic adjusters and a remote oil filter. Aside from what you see in the photos, below I list (in no particular order) some of the upgrades which are a little less obvious.

Engine / lubrication / carburettor / Ignition / Primary drive / engine mounts :
1. Nut n’ bolt rebuild to tight specs, with Hepolite piston rings, lightened rocker arms, drilled cam followers, etc. .. too many details to list here.
2. Anti-ring (noise) blocks between the fins.
3. Oil filter : remote / replaceable cartridge type. Magnetic drain plug
4. Oil tank uncovered / exposed for improved oil cooling and repositioned square to the frame
5. Carburettor : Single conversion by MAP, fitted with additional heat insulators, and using a Mikuni H3 carburettor with choke lever.
6. Air Filter : K & N (750 Commando style NO-010) - Air filter for life (cleanable / re-usable type)
7. Air Filter : Stainless Steel grille / mesh within polished aluminium plates.
8. Ignition : Bransden-Boyer Mk3 electronic.
9. Primary Drive : Dry clutch + Belt drive. Gearbox on dual adjusters.
10. Isolastics : Stainless vernier adjustment from RGM., plus the Mk3 head steady.
11. Brass exhaust roses.

Gearbox / Final drive
12. Gearbox dismantled, inspected, and rebuilt with all new ; bearings, bushes, seals, o-rings, selector and kick-start springs, and the kick-start pawl. Magnetic drain plug + Mk3 breather vent (06-5199) fitted + Stainless Allen-keyed set-screws for outer case
13. Layshaft bearing upgraded to superblend roller (was a ball race). Countershaft bushes extended to near whole length.
14. Gearbox gears replaced with new or near-new : 1st set, 2nd set, 3rd lay-shaft, and 4th set. Forth set changed to wide-ratio 24:18 (org was 23:18).
15. 1st and 2nd set to close-ratio to reduce step from 845 to 426 RPM .. for smoother gear changes at town speeds.
16. Gearbox sprocket to 22 teeth. Standard 42 rear wheel sprocket.
17. Rear drive : Reynolds chain with an enclosed chain-case in GRP. (I have the original open SS item).

Suspension / Brakes / Cycle parts / Wheels & Tyres :
18. Rear suspension : Koni-Holland Dial-a-Ride adjustable dampers 9302, with dual rate springs.
19. Swinging arm : from the MK3 Commando, which has larger diameter tubes and is stiffer. Brackets were added to retain the Mk2 rear drum brake. The swinging arm pivot bushes are modified to sit in an oil bath.
20. Front Brake : Disk drilled + master cylinder upgrade by RMG + Stainless braided brake pipe.
21. Rear brake / hub is new and balanced
22. Fuel Tank : The original GRP petrol tank in dark green was replaced with a Steel one. This was de-seamed and painted metallic green with gold pin stripe.
23. Handlebars : almost straight Vincent style.
24. Rear mudguard : centred to the wheel !
25. Storage spaces : There is now a tool-roll storage space under the seat and again in the fastback tail.
26. Ignition switch : moved to headlamp shell. This incorporates the light switch.
27. Coil mounting brackets reconfigured to raise the coils further under the tank for neatness, and improve the HT lead routing.
28. Rear light & polished aluminium alloy housing : Triumph Trident 160
29. Wheels : Akront flanged alloy wheel rims, w/ Stainless steel spokes (19" F & 18" R)
30. Tyres : Front - Avon Super-Venom AM18 100/ 90-V19. Rear - Promaxx Street Maxxis 110/ 90-18 61H

Despite enjoying the restoration - I never used the Norton very much at all, as it was too powerful a sports bike for me. Instead I restored and still ride “nicely sedate” post-war Sunbeams. The bike was used only for an occasional jaunt around Suffolk's country lanes, was shown on the Norton Owner's Club stand at the Copdock Show, and has been sitting in the back of my dry garage (since last being road licensed in 2013). Recently I’ve been recommissioning her with the view to selling. This of course included oil change to both engine & gearbox.

She is UK registered and now again legally on the road and ready to roll. The handling is precise and she rides very well and is quicker and more fun than you might expect .. and not even run-in yet.!

This is a particularly special bike with thousands of hours and huge cost invested. So no time-wasters making silly offers or wanting to swap please. Serious interest only please.

IP6 9JA is near Ipswich : and not far off the A12 from London and / A14 from Cambridge. For viewing or collection please drop me a line or call in advance. Same number if you have any questions, or else email me. Anyone planning to come for a road test please ensure you have evidence of fully comprehensive insurance cover for an 850cc motorcycle you do not own.

For European and further afield International buyers : If this truly beautiful Norton Commando Interstate is of interest to you then sorry but I do not speak other than the English language .. but Google translator is very useful and I will do my best :)) I live not far from the Ferry Port of Harwich which is convenient to the Europe via the Hook of Holland. I am also close to the Shipping Container Port of Felixstowe - and would be glad to assist any shipping agent. Of course nothing leaves here until payment has been made in cash or else cleared my account.

My Best regards, Peter
