Ex-Police Range Rover ‘Classic’ V8 EFi. Now fitted with a 200Tdi, LT77 5-speed manual transmission with Hi/Low transfer box and permanent 4-wheel-drive. Disc brakes. Rostyle alloy wheels with 4 x Pirelli tyres. Electric windows. Power steering. Registered on 5/10/1989. Accompanying this very original example is a history file documenting receipts, old MoTs, some restoration photographs plus a spare set of keys.
The Land Rover ‘Range Rover’ was launched in 1970 after four years of development. Originally only available as a 3-door model with the 3.5 Rover V8, it was a huge success and some say it invented the term ‘Sports Utility Vehicle’. In the early 1970s, the Musée du Louvre in Paris exhibited a Range Rover as an ‘exemplary work of industrial design’. The Range Rover is still in production today, albeit as a totally different vehicle, but still using similar world-beating design principles.
The Range Rover was not just a high-end luxury vehicle – Due to it’s all round performance, it was also adopted by various emergency services. This particular example entered service with the Greater Manchester Police, operating with motorway patrol stationed out of Birch Services on the M62. Since release from the Police, it has had only two former keepers, the first using it as their everyday family vehicle up until being laid up in 2001. In 1995, with 181,549 miles on the clock, a brand new 200Tdi was professionally fitted (written engineers inspection included in file), replacing the old 3.5 V8 for better fuel economy – Range Rover was later available with the Tdi engine, and famously achieved 53mpg on a publicity run from Lands End to John O’Groats! … Realistically you can expect low-mid 30s which is almost twice the figure the V8 would achieve.
In early 2018, the current owner acquired and meticulously rebuilt the vehicle, bringing it back to show condition – so don’t be put off by the 242,000 miles on the clock! It received a full structural restoration, with any rot carefully cut out and replaced with new high-quality panels including sills, inner wings, and rear arches. The repair work was first painted with etch primer, followed by chassis black, seam sealed, and a final coat of epoxy stone chip on the underside. The exterior paint work was carried out to a very high standard in the original Chamonix White, along the matt-black bonnet which was specific to Greater Manchester Police vehicles (reducing glare into the driver’s eyes). To finish it off, the original-specification Rostyle wheels were shot blasted and powder coated.
The 200Tdi diesel fires up readily and runs nicely, punching above its weight on the road cruising along at the legal limit easily. It has just received a full fluid and filter service, and has also had a new Dayco cambelt fitted. The engine itself only has ~60,000 miles under its belts! The transmission all works as it should with low/high ranges selecting smoothly, the fully overhauled brake system stops the car properly and the then-revolutionary coil sprung suspension lives up to the Range Rover name!
Inside, the grey Velour trim is in good shape with only the driver’s seat having a small age-related hole, and both plastic rear door cards by the handles. The electric windows all work, along with the interior and under-bonnet courtesy lights. The original type spare wheel, jack and wheel brace are in the boot.
Overall, this is a great opportunity to own a classic Range Rover with some good provenance. It would not take much to return the car back to full police specification if you desire – the hi vis orange grille and large mud flaps are available with the vehicle, and we have a contact for the lights and equipment. Alternatively you can just drive it as she stands, and would be perfectly useable everyday… We think it would make an excellent classic rally support vehicle/tow car - a tow bar is also available if you require it! The vehicle is MoT’d until 16th May 2020 so is ready to be used and enjoyed!
