1988 RELIANT TEMPEST 850 JOHN BOX'S NUMBER ONE For Sale
I bought this car from an enthusiast who had started to rebuild it, with a view to my finishing it and then giving it pride of place in my Reliant collection. I am selling it strictly as an unfinished project, but here is a brief resume of what he told me about it:
He said he believes from his research that it is John Box's original number 1 prototype, and this has since been backed up by another Reliant enthusiast who has been in touch with me. It is possibly the very first Tempest to be registered and put on the road in 1988 and is registered correctly as a Reliant Tempest. (Apparently many of these are registered as a Fox or Kitten, depending on which chassis they are built on).
He spent a great deal of time and effort bringing it up to this stage and the work he did included:
Complete car dismantled and rebuilt
Engine taken apart and rebuilt.
All new brakes, shoes, pipes and cylinders etc.
New lights all round
Wheels shotblasted and powdercoated
New track rod ends
Body and panels resprayed to a basic home workshop standard using a compressor and spray gun - you may be happy with this as it is, or you may want to give it a high gloss, professional respray. Personally we like the character of the car as it is, as it gives it a real old classic look.
Anyway, his failing health prevented him from finishing it.
When I bought the car it started easily and we drove it up on to my trailer. It has since been stored by myself in dry conditions with a cover on, until a few weeks ago when I took the cover off to take the photos and thought what a lovely little car it is. We then attached a battery pack to it and to my delight it fired into life.
In addition to what you see I have the two side windows and the frame for the roof. Personally I think it would be better used without these, as I think it looks absolutely great in its present form.
It needs finishing, sympathetic cosmetic improvement and restoration to the interior / boot etc, and no doubt brakes setting up and so on, and the carburettor setting etc., and will need to be put through an MOT but, as you know, good examples of these fetch around £10,000, so it represents a great opportunity to the right person.
It will need collecting on a trailer.

One of only 120 left on the road this example has been carefully dry stored for many years but due to ill health this project was never finished. Complete and only needs putting back together, some.....
