It is with great regret that I have to offer my 1959 Ford Fairlane Galaxie 500 for sale.
I bought this as a forever car a year ago but circumstances have changed.
The 1959 Ford Fairlane is the iconic ‘50s Yank, used by Eds Diners for their decor and numerous classic car insurance companies on their brochures and adverts.
This has to be one of the best unmolested Fairlanes in the country. Running a Ford FE 332ci in on a Ford Cruise-O-Matic 2 or 3 speed auto she runs powerful, smooth and economical.
Resprayed about 10 years ago in her original turquoise and white with 2 tone sea green interior she really does turn heads. The respray is not perfect but from 6ft looks good.
When I got her she had an incorrect carburettor fitted so I sourced a correct Autolite 2100 2 pot in the States, had it totally refurbished and shipped over. She now runs beautifully. A new radiator ensures there are no overheating problems. She has been lowered 1.5” and polybushed which gives a nice stance without altering the standard look and also makes the handling much better with no wallowing. The brakes have all recently been overhauled and although not power assisted stopping is not a case of using both feet.
I have also had the tracking, camber and caster all realigned so she drives straight and the steering wheel self centres nicely.
Unusually for a yank this is a totally non option car, no power steering or brakes, no aircon, vacuum wipers, even no reversing lights. Saying that, the steering is light, brakes are effective, wipers work well and the rear lights are bright enough to reverse with.
The interior is all original except for new head lining. I have Chrome smoothie wheels fitted with narrow white wall tyres but I also have 5 original steel wheels, 3 with matching narrow whitewall tyres and 2 that need tyres. 4 original hub caps that mirror the rear lights complete the set. The heater works well and all switches and dials work except the time clock (these are cheap to buy). I think the temperature sender is playing up but again these are pennies.
She has done 90000 miles from new and until I bought her she had never left Norfolk, being made in the Ford factory in Norfolk Virginia, used in Virginia until around 1980 (dry state so zero rust). Then shipped to U.S.A.F. Base in Norfolk Uk. When her owner returned to the States she was sold to owners in Norfolk Uk who never drove her out of Norfolk. So I am the first person to drive the car outside Norfolk. I have done 3000 absolutely trouble free miles.
I dont think you will find another quite as nice as this, not perfect, I drive it every day that I can, shopping, cruising etc. But if you want something iconic, a bit different, and something to get noticed in, this is the car foryou.
Oh, the nice young lady in the pics doesn’t go with the car, that was a professional photoshoot and the photos will be appearing in motor magazines in the States.
