Francesco Zefferino Sbarro (* February 27, 1939 in Presicce (province of Lecce, Italy), better known as Franco Sbarro, is an Italian designer and developer of a wide range of vehicles presented annually at the Geneva Motor Show. As the son of a farmer, he was fascinated by mechanics. After beginning to study literature in Lecce, his passion for automobiles drove him to Neuchâtel (Switzerland) in November 1957 to look for a job as a car mechanic. His meeting with Georges Filipinetti, the owner of the Scuderia Filipinetti, led him to become its chief mechanic. He was responsible for the development and maintenance of racing cars and also supervised the restoration of an AC Cobra, Ferrari 330P3 and Ford GT40, at which time he also built his first vehicle: a Filipinetti Coupé. In 1968, Sbarro left the Filipinetti team to found the A.C.A. Atelier d‘Etude de constructions automobiles in Grandson, Switzerland, on the shores of Lake Neuchâtel. The first project to bear his name was the Sbarro ACA Spider, a two-seater race car for young drivers based on an NSU TTS 1000 with Spiess engine. Due to a lack of orders, the prototype was not completed.
Vehicle description: This special prototype of the SBARRO ACA Spider was developed and realized in 1966 by the Swiss car designer Franco Sbarro on the basis of an NSU TT chassis. Originally built with a Spiess 997ccm engine, an engine overhaul with capacity extension to stable 1300 ccm (using Mahle pistons) was carried out as part of a complete restoration in 2012. The painting of the GRP body of the vehicle was completely redone. There have also been cautious improvements and modifications to the oil cooling system, brake system, chassis and other technical details, such as Equipped with bucket seats, a high-revving engine and a “short” mountain ratio, the vehicle is ideally suited for historic motorsport events.
The vehicle has a German road registration with H-registration and German TÜV until 09.2020.
The vehicle has covered almost 10,000 km since the restoration.
