Well, where do I start?! RWA Midgets are often seen as the most sought after of the lot – and as this British Racing Green example has been subject to a comprehensive Heritage Bodyshell restoration - surely that makes it the best of the best! It represents excellent value for money and is a great investment. In fact, Mike Authers, the Midget Guru, recently had a very similar car in stock that was a great deal more money! The car is, of course, exempt from MOT and Tax, and very cheap classic insurance, meaning the year-to-year costs are minimal.
The previous engineer owner started the rebuild in around 2010, having bought the new shell. No expense was spared and this was a comprehensive rebuild – not just a ‘stick rusty old bits onto a new shell’ like some of them are!
The shell was supplied by the MGB Hive. The engine has been subject to a full rebuild, has been fully balanced, fitted with an uprated cam, 11:1 compression ratio, unleaded cylinder head and new ancillaries.
Most items have been replaced, including brand new carburettors, all of the suspension, brakes, fuel tank and lines, new wiring loom, stainless steel exhaust replacement quarter light and windscreen rubbers - the list is just endless!
The bodywork remains very good indeed, having been professionally painted in 2 pack paint – the wing-top seams and A panels are all bubble-free! Again, it’s nice to see a Heritage car that has been professionally painted and all of the panels have been gapped well. The doors shut with a satisfying clunk. The chromework is in very good all-round condition. The wire wheels are in good order and don’t clunk on their splines like most do – the colour of them might not be to your taste but they would easily be re-powdercoated to a colour of your choice for £150ish.
Mechanically, the car is in good order. The engine starts readily and runs well, ticking over steadily, just as it should. The stainless exhaust produces a lovely note and the car pulls and drives very well (for a Midget!). Oil pressure is just as it should be, and the car does not overheat – nor does it appear to use any excess oil or water. A Kenlowe fan has been fitted to replace the original engine-driven fan. Lumenition electronic ignition has been fitted. Electrically, everything works just as it should, including the heater blower. The gear selection is really nice and slick, and the car stops in a straight line, just as you’d expect, and rides well with no horrible knocks or bangs. They’re excellent fun to drive! You’ll probably notice from the pictures that the front end looks to be sitting a little high – this is just because the front springs haven’t had chance to settle down as the car hasn’t covered enough miles yet!
The interior is beautiful, having had a full interior set from PJM at great expense. The seat covers are plush leather (these cost over £700 alone!!!), replacement door cards, carpet set etc. The dashboard has been refurbished, also, in the correct crinkle finish. The hood is in excellent order and has also been replaced. A hood cover is also included in the sale.
Since the rebuild, the car has had very minimal usage, as the previous owner was more interested in building than driving! It’s covered only a few hundred miles since it hit the road, so the engine is barely run in. As he was building the car for himself, he hasn’t kept a great deal of paperwork from the rebuild – but the BMH Heritage Body stamps are clearly visible, etc – you can see exactly what’s been done just by looking at the car!
Really, to build a top quality example on a Heritage Shell these days will cost you around £30,000 – making this one an absolute bargain. An shell alone now costs over £10,000+VAT, and that’s not even painted!
All in all, this is an absolutely stunning little car that is absolutely ready to be used and enjoyed. No, it’s not a concourse-condition show winner, but it’s a car that has been restored very well indeed, and I’m sure that you won’t find another Heritage Bodyshell car of this quality, for this price anywhere.
