1951 Jowett Jupiter Sports For Sale by Auction

To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION WITHOUT RESERVE at RM Sothebys' The Sáragga Collection event, 21 September 2019. Estimate:€30, 000 - €50, 000 Advanced engineering by von EberhorstInnovative horizontally opposed four-cylinder engineOne of only 1, 200 built Long a maker of two-cylinder cars, Jowett Cars, Ltd introduced a horizontally opposed four-cylinder on the eve of World War II. After the war, this evolved to the Javelin saloon, a sleek fastback car with a 1, 486 cc overhead-valve engine. In 1951, a sports two-seater named Jupiter appeared, using the Javelin engine in an innovative torsion-bar-suspended tubular chassis designed by Austrian engineer Robert Eberan von Eberhorst, known for his work on the Auto Union Type D Grand Prix car. Restored in bright green, the car is upholstered in beige leather, complemented by a varnished wood instrument panel. As befits a sports model, it is fitted with a 5, 500 rpm rev counter. A bench seat allows three passengers, enabled by a column-mounted gear change. Charming and seldom seen, this Jupiter Sports would prove a conversation piece wherever it goes. RM Sotheby’s is pleased to announce that this Jowett Jupiter was the winner of the 1951 Rallye Internacional de Lisboa, driven by Joaquim Filipe Nogueira.
