1996 Ducati 900ss (Superlight/SL replica) VGC SOLD

1996 Ducati 900ss (900 Superlight/ 900SL replica) 16, 700 miles at time of listing, very good condition, just serviced, MOT June 2020 (no advisories). Mature owner (like at least the two previous owners, I believe). I have had this bike since August 2016 and no expense has been spared on it in my care. I have always run it on Shell Advance Ultra 10w-40. I had it professionally overhauled/ recommissioned when I bought it, including dismantling and greasing all the suspension bearings and fitting a new fuel pump. It has been professionally serviced every year since I got it. I have spent over £3k in my ownership of it, which includes the cost of making it into a Superlight replica. It has really beautiful stainless Silmotor cans which sound fantastic and not too loud. They hang from OEM Ducati brackets (expensive). The solo seat was very expensive – I got a top quality grp seat from Diopa in Germany and had it fitted with OEM Ducati brackets and seat pads (expensive). Having it drilled, cut and fitted professionally took hours (and c. £300) and I got a really beautiful professional paint job done on it (another £300). I spent so much because secondhand Superlight seats are rare as hen’s teeth. I got the wheel painted with black nylon paint, often reckoned to be more suitable than powder coating. It is surprising how much it costs to make a Superlight replica; it might have been cheaper just to buy a Superlight. But it was worth it – the bike’s appearance is transformed and it attracts admiring comments wherever it goes. With the mods I got done it looks strikingly like an 851, as I believe Ducati intended before they blurred the design with the rather ugly dual seat and standard exhausts. The great thing is, that it doesn’t have the complexity and running costs of the 851, and nor does it have the flaking rockers of the early 4-valve Ducatis (748 especially) that I initially fancied. It’s why I went for a desmodue. Like all belt drive Ducatis from this era the paint is flaking from the engine cases (more so on the left than the right – see pics). And the front head and cylinder get road muck on them, but the bolts retaining the rocker cover (unlike many or most Ducatis from this era) are well lubed and free to turn, not seized. I guess you could paint the engine cases relatively easily but I just accepted them the way they are. You can’t see the flaking paint unless you look inside the fairing. I really look after this bike and it shines, but I’m a rider, not an obsessive cleaner and polisher. The bike has a few scuffs, scrapes and chips given its age, but not many. The chips will be touched up easily with the touch up paint I got from the spray painter (but haven’t got round to using). The most prominent chip is still small – it’s the white mark at the back of the tank, which you can see if you zoom in there. The bike is used regularly, except in winter, and never for short runs. The rear shock is slightly extended, which makes the bike turn quicker while remaining very stable. And the stance of the bike looks much better, too. The bike carburates beautifully and stops and goes really well. The motor is sweet and there are no worrying knocks, rumbles or rattles. It got new OEM cam belts in July 2018 and these were checked in June 2019. It got a DID gold X chain and AFAM steel sprockets (to reduce the gearing slightly – a massive improvement) at 15, 500 miles and an Exact Start heavy duty battery lead conversion (surprisingly expensive once professionally fitted) which has transformed the normal 900 Ducati hesitant starting. The battery is quite recent too. Bridgestone Battlax BT30 Evo tyres fitted at 13, 960 miles with life left in them still. Lots of receipts and a full service history in my ownership (the bike was serviced in July 2016 by the then owner and there is a receipt for all necessary parts from Ducati John). There are no pre-2016 servicing history records but the bike has obviously been well cared for, and going by previous MOTs the bike seems to have covered 20 miles between August 2007 and July 2016. I’ve been in two minds about selling the bike but it is a bit quick for me now, and I’m not doing it justice. The bike comes with the original purchase documents and owner’s manual etc, a spare key and a Haynes manual. The original exhaust cans, brackets and dual seat are available for purchase separately. Few other 900ss have been modified the way this one has. Some have non standard cans but they’re not stainless Silmotors upswept 900 Superlight style. Hardly any other 900ss have been fitted with the Superlight seat and a proper paint job. And I haven’t seen any for sale with all of these mods. It’s such a sweet bike – every time I start it I wonder why I’m selling it. But then I remember – I really don’t use it the way it was intended to be ridden. And that’s a waste. I’ll stick to my 1975 BMW 750 twin. I can do justice to that, at least!
