Proper barn find here.... classic mini LE first ever limited edition mini from 1976.
After being parked up since 1990 in a garage 2 years ago I recommissioned this mini back on the road.
Wax oiled from new with a patina look this mini is far from perfect but is as it left the factory, a rare sight theses days.
The car is very original with the factory radio and speaker all working, all the original feathers intact along with a retro wind deflector a pile of tax discs on the dash.
The car starts and drives very well and covered 500 miles last year attending shows where it was top 25 minis at castle Combe last year!
The car came with no history just the V5
I spend hours searching for information but as it was never registered as a limited edition the search only shows as a 1976 1000.
I contacted the DVLA to get a owner search but no luck. I have found 5 LE stripey on a few forums and facebook some modified and some as projects.
I could have changed the tank but it has a new exhaust sticker from 1979. New water pump, flush through and fresh coolant.
Ball joints and bearings overhauled and greased
New tyres were next along with new wipers, a look over the electrics surprisingly they all worked with no work required.
Quick clean not taking anything really away from the original look and it was off for an mot.
Now being MOT exempt the mot tester appreciated what it was but i still wanted him to have a good look over it finding very little to cause a problem. Nothing was found and for a 40 year old car its in very good shape.
The mini seemed to be modelled off the MGB in Brooklands green and they orange striped interior. The first, of the limited-edition Minis, with its reclining front seats, twin doors mirrors, striped cloth upholstery (of course) and fresh air vents. The paint finish was the Brooklands Green usually seen on the MGB. Some of these special features would subsequently appear on the 1978 Series IV models while the ‘Stripey’ is now one of the rarest of all Minis.
