The iconic wide body arches of some of AMGs finest work do not disappoint here with this W124 looking aggressive, squat and very very wide. The Blue/black Metallic paint is in excellent order all over with a deep and glossy shine having recently been through a mini restoration. the paint stripped down and the authenticity of the steel AMG arches checked for providenc with a photographic record on file. Painted plastic lower trim panels present well fitted along with the AMG rear spoiler and deep wide bumpers. Light lenses front and rear were renewed and show clear and crack free.
Glass is original as per Mercedes high build spec with a sun band on the frond windscreen and a heated rear pane. Bronze chrome trim surrounds all windows and roof rails while the front grille is body colour with black inserts.
The interior is covered in plush black leather, hugely 80s it features Recaro electronically adjustable bucket seats which move in a multitude of ways along with seat heating and memory, these feel like new with no sagging or heavy wear to the bolster. Rear seats present in the same order with optional headrests neatly stowed in a cutout on the rear parcel shelf.
The interior has been treated to the same cosmetic restoration as the exterior with the wood renovated and reconditioned along with the leather which has been thoroughly cleaned and treated. The AMG steering wheel is pride of place along with AMG dials, the speedo displaying a max of 300kph! Sadly the AMG Japan running in procedure sticker once fitted in-front of the gearshift was lost during the recent renovation.
Optional extra air conditioning is fitted along with an electric tilt and slide sunroof.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The enlarged 3.4L engine is in fine running order having recently been subjected to a full service to include spark plugs.
The AMG conversions were done on the standard 3.0L M104.980 engine by AMG as an independent tuner. Technically a 3310cc the cylinders were over-bored by 3mm and the crank from the M603 Engine used to increase the stroke. The cylinder heads were optimised for airflow and controlled with bespoke AMG camshafts, all in, increasing the bhp to 270, at the time a high figure considering the displacement of the naturally aspirated engine.
The transmission is the standard 5 Speed Automatic with manual gear holds in 2nd, 3rd and 4th for a more sporty drive.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The original AMG stamped 17 inch split rims are present, these were build by OZ racing exclusively at the time. A 3 piece rim they have been recently fully stripped down and refurbished with all new chrome, paint, bolts and seals. They look absolutely stunning with a huge chrome deep dish and body colour centres, the wheels fill the enlarged arches to perfection both in size and offset completing the wide-body stance and iconic AMG 80s look.
Brakes are hidden behind the alloys, these work are they should with good pedal feel.
Supplied new by Mercedes-Benz and built in late 1989 as a high spec Japanese model 300CE-24. It was destined to go straight to AMG for mechanical and body modifications and once completed it was registered as such in AMG 3.4l guise in Japan on the 12th July 1990.
The Japanese owners pack is present along with its export certificate, shipping documents and sales invoice confirming it AMG 300CE 3.4-24v identity and subsequent export from the Japanese registration system.
There are no service records from it time in Japan however there is Mercedes Benz main dealer warranty information present confirming the car was covered and in good order in 2006, this cross referenced with information on the export certificate shows the mileage at this time at 118,200kms (73,446 miles).
On import into the UK in 2013 this very special pre-merger AMG was treated to a fully body strip down to confirm it’s wide body status and ensure it presented in the best possible condition both externally and internally along with mechanical servicing work. A photographic record of the bodywork and service invoices are included.
