Rare Letourneur & Marchand 1924 Citroën 5 HP For Sale
Presented at the Paris Motor Show in 1921, the Citroën 5 HP was about to become the first popular European car due to simple design, easy driving and limited running costs. 80.232 units of the 5 HP have been produced from 1922 to 1926, mainly 2 or 3 seater Torpedoes or convertible. A few dozen bodies have been equipped with special coachwork, of which the present model is part.
This 5 HP is still in a very nice condition. She is equipped with a rare « coupé docteur » coachwork and the various expert reports attribute it to « Letourneur & Marchand », coachbuilders in Neuilly sur Seine, France. The « coupé docteur » refers to a closed coachwork with two seats: one for the driver and one for the doctor, this one being set back compared to the first one. The exact date of release of this Citroën 5 HP is unknown, but it was estimated that she first hit the road in 1924. She was acquired by a French Norman resident in Saint-Etienne du Rouvray in 1954. He sold it in 1996, forty-two years later, to a collector from south of Paris. Finally, in 2015 the current owner acquired her. So there are only three different owners in the last sixty-five years.
The yellow paint is in very good condition. The vinyl roof is also in good condition. The seller reports a partially defective fixing plate in the windshield, see details in the photo gallery. The body shell is in very good condition, without any trace of corrosion, and the openings are correctly aligned. The chassis is also in very good condition.
The interior was completely restored in 1996, including the refurbishment of all the trim and the repair of the interior wood. It is still in very good condition today. The upholstery of the two offset seats shows no signs of wear. The steering wheel is leather covered, and the turning arrows are functional. However, the owner indicated that the instrument panel amperemeter was out of service, as was the right light bulb. The lantern on the left custody is also not functional.
The engine of the 5HP is a four-cylinder 856 cm³ with side-valve and horizontal carburettor, thermosiphon-cooled and producing eleven horsepower at 2,100 rpm. Coupled with a three-speed non-synchronized gearbox plus reverse, it propels the car at a maximum (theoretical) speed of 60 km/h. Although the engine and gearbox are functional, this model cannot hit the road in this state. The workshop in charge of its maintenance listed the following points to be dealt with: replacing the two front bearings and the two rear bearings, replace the steering box and repair a leak on the radiator. These points are confirmed by the report of the last technical inspection carried out by this 5HP in February 2017.
This 1924 Citroën 5 HP type C3 with coachwork by Letourneur & Marchand - Coupé Docteur comes with a French collection registration document in the name of the seller and is offered for sale at the price of €14,000.
