2000 Porsche 911 - 996 GT3 R For Sale

Introduced in 1997, the Porsche 996 was the first 911 model to be built with a water-cooled engine in deference to the age-old format of air-cooled units for which the marque had become synonymous with. Initially, the standard 996 Carrera road car had a flat-six engine of 3. 4 litre capacity. The more limited models such as Targa, Carrera 4S, Turbo, GT2 and GT3 received 3. 6 litre versions.

The 996 GT3 road car was built to homologate the race versions and boasted some enviable technical pedigree. The cylinder heads of the GT3 engine were based on those from the 959 and the block was the M64 type from the 964, it being stronger than the lighter 993 M64 block. The 6-speed gearbox of the 996 GT3 was derived from the type Porsche used in the 993 GT2 but had a cable rather than pushrod mechanism which saved weight.

Whilst the ‘Cup’ cars served well in National and Supercup Championships, the GT3 R was the first of the internationally homologated GT3 race cars and was followed by the RS (from 2001) and finally the RSR (from 2004). All three variants dominated their classes in all major championships around the world and the model remains one of the most successful series of Porsche racecars to this day. Built by Porsche Motorsports either to a customer’s specific requirements or, more commonly supplied in standard specification for customers to modify to whichever race series they competed in (FIA or ACO regulations). A new class called LM GT was created at Le Mans specifically for the new GT3 R and other manufacturers soon joined with their models.

The Porsche Certificate of Origin on file confirms chassis WP0ZZZ99ZYS692126 as a genuine factory GT3 R and was delivered in white with a specially ordered package of lighting, engine oil fast fill and adjustable rollbars. Of note, it is believed only around seventy 996 GT3 Rs were constructed in 2000.

YS692126 had a successful race career competing in the 2000 and 2001 FIA GT Championships with front-running Italian privateer team ART Engineering. The car achieved a class win in its first race at the A1 Ring in Austria (now known as the Red Bull Ring) driven by Fabio Mancini and Gianni Collini.

After the final round of the FIA GT Championship in October 2001 the ‘R’ was in hands of another Italian race team, Tirelli Motorsport who entered the car in the 6 Ore Vallelunga in November. Subsequently the car competed with Tirelli in the 2003 Belcar Spa Euro Race at Spa Francorchamps and the 2003 6 Ore Vallelunga where it finished 8th.

Circa 2006 the car was purchased from Tirelli Motorsport by an Italian collector who entrusted the car to Modena Classic Works of Modena to carry out a refurbishment program. We do not understand the car to have raced since and it has remained in private ownership until we acquired the car in the middle of 2018.

Understandably professional preparation is recommended prior to any track use but the car is on the button and in wonderfully unmolested condition. Visually it has been returned to the livery and sponsor decals it wore in its class-winning race at the A1 Ring in 2000.

A 911 FOR RACING? Contrary to what you might think, many Porsche 911 2.0 T were bought for racing. The reason is simple: it's a simple car by design, which can easily be prepared for the track. Already light from the outset because it was lightly equipped, it offered good value for money for this type of use. The 2.0-litre ...
