1968 Mk1 MGB Roadster - Tartan Red, Disc Wheels, Older Resto SOLD

More pictures here: - details above

There’s nothing quite like a late 60s MGB Roadster. They are the perfect mix between the sleek, stylish design of the much earlier cars, coupled with the refinements - 5 bearing engine, better hood design, etc, making it the ultimate driver’s MGB. These cars are a fantastic investment, with prices continually rising all of the time.

This car is no exception, and I feel you’ll struggle to find a better one for this price. It’s had a great deal of work during its life, which I will detail throughout the ad. The ‘feel’ of the car, both in terms of build quality and the way that the car drives, clearly shows that the standard of work carried out has been very good indeed. No, it’s not a show car, but presents really nicely, and if you’re after a solid, reliable MGB to use that won’t deteriorate quickly, then this is most probably the one for you! Of course, the car is now Tax and MOT exempt so running costs are minimal.

RMC Classics have recently purchased this car back, having sold it a couple of years ago to an owner who has cared very well for the car, and had no choice but to let go, as his daughter is being married this year! During his ownership, the car has been treated to a major service and various other things by Mechspec MG specialists, who described the car as ‘…a good authentic example , with an absolute demon of an engine” – sums it up, really! I drove the car back 140 miles, from the east coast, without fault.

This car was registered in early 1968, unusual in the fact that it’s a very late Mk1. It has all of the features of a Mk1 (GHN-3 vin number, narrow gearbox tunnel, aluminium bonnet, different location for interior door handles, no reversing lights etc), so I can only presume that the car was sitting in a showroom for a few months before being sold!

Over recent years, the car has been very well cared for. It was purchased as a project car from the Welsh MG Centre in Wrexham in the mid-2000s, and then subjected to a full mechanical and structural rebuild. The car is now bodily and structurally very sound indeed and I can’t see anything unsightly. The sills appear to be rock solid, as are the spring hangers, chassis legs, etc.

Bodily, the car is nice and straight and has clearly been professionally painted and restored. Wing-top seams are bubble free, as are the rear wings and wheelarches. The panel gaps are very good and the doors shut with a satisfying ‘clunk’. The paint finish is good and has a nice shine – there are a few very minor chips and blisters here and there but nothing to worry about at all. It’s a few years since it has been repainted so this is to be expected, and in my opinion is much better than buying a car that’s been painted very recently, as there could be horrors hiding underneath. Again – a nice, honest car which retains its sense of history, rather than an over-restored example.

As you can see in the pictures – it presents very well indeed! The very rare disc-type wheels with chrome hubcaps are fitted, and it’s really nice to see one that hasn’t been coverted to wires. Personally I prefer them to wire wheels, as they flex much less, and therefore the handling is noticeably better. Not to mention they’re much easier to clean! Matching Uniroyal tyres are fitted all round and have plenty of tread remaining. The tread pattern is very ‘classic’ looking, and fits in well with the rest of the car.

The interior is a truly lovely place to be. The seats look to be the originals, and are in absolutely fantastic condition considering. New carpets have been fitted, along with refurbished dashboard at some point (now showing some minor chips here and there). All in all, it looks fantastic! It’s nice to see a car that hasn’t had tacky aftermarket seat covers, door cards, wooden dashboard fitted – it’s exactly ‘as God intended’! The original Banjo steering wheel is still in place. The hood and frame is in good order, with some minor repairs, but appears to be watertight and taught. A half tonneau is also included.

The engine starts readily and runs well, ticking over smoothly, just as it should. Sadly there are no bills in the history file to support an engine rebuild, but as oil pressure, compressions etc are so good, I’d be amazed if it hadn’t been rebuilt at the time of the restoration. Lumenition electronic ignition is fitted. A later 4-synchro gearbox has been fitted to replace the original 3-synchro box – the later boxes are much stronger, as are the overdrive units. The overdrive on this car works exactly as it should, switching in and out of engagement with no fuss. Other sensible mods include a relocated fuel pump and 12v battery conversion.

You can see in the pictures that the engine bay is tidy (and, body colour) - it could be detailed to look very nice indeed. Exhaust note is lovely and the car pulls and drives as it should. Halogen headlamps have been fitted (another good idea!).

I have a box folder full of bills and receipts for various parts etc since the car was bought from the Welsh MG Centre, along with various old MOTs.

All in all, this is an absolutely stunning little car that is absolutely ready to be used and enjoyed. You won’t find many cars at this price that have been finished to this standard. No, it’s not a £18, 000 minter, but I travel all over the country to view these cars, and this one is particularly good for the money I’m asking.
