3000 Mk 2 Prepared by John Chatham For Sale edit C122060 | | | A Serious Rally car. Fantastic condition.
This 1961 Healey 3000 Mk2 underwent a ground-up re-build by John Chatham in 2002. This is the first of three recreations of his famous race/rally car and it was commissioned and prepared for William Cadbury. The second car was completed later and is now owned by the Chairman of the Swiss Healey Club. The third is yet to be finished and when completed and sold will be seriously expensive.
After competing in various long distance rallies, the car was returned to John Chatham in 2008 for a refresh and engine re-build. Since then it has covered approx 500 miles and is barely run-in.
Chassis ... During a ground-up re-build, the chassis has been substantially strengthened and braced to remove the scuttle shake for which Healeys are noted. The suspension pick-ups have been reinforced and a twin mounted anti-roll bar fitted. Sump guard fitted as well as a roll cage with reinforced mountings.
Bodywork ... At the same time the body was rebuilt using lighter components such as the bonnet from a 100S and alloy wings fitted all round with flared arches. A removable GRP hard top gives further strength and stability to the structure. Other features include side cooling vents, quick release bonnet and grill and alloy and perspex side screens.
Trim... Period 100S type dashboard is fitted with full instrumentation. 100S Rally style seats in red leather. Full rally harnesses. A hood and tonneau cover are available in addition to the removable "works hard top".
Engine / Transmission... Fully rebuilt engine and gearbox with new pistons and rods. Fully balanced crank with lightened fly wheel and 280 degree cam. Unleaded head. Triple SU HD6 carburettors. 6 Branch manifold. Oil cooler. Kenlowe fan. Competition gearbox, overdrive and clutch. Quaife 3.9 ratio limited slip diff. Engine delivers approx 190BHP.
Steering/ Suspension/ Brakes... All front suspension strengthened. Competition front shock absorbers. New springs. New standard ratio steering box. 2 degrees negative camber and 2 degrees castor. Uprated brakes – Type 16 front callipers, Thicker discs, 7/8th Master cylinder and servo.
Condition... Between 2002 and 2004 the car completed the Scottish Malts, the Emerald Isles and the Classic Monte Carlo rallies. Since then it has had two owners who have lavished money on it, have prepared it for more rallying but who have done very little with it other than take it out on fine Sundays!
In 2008 the car was returned to John Chatham to have a service and checkover during which the engine was removed and rebuilt with new pistons. Since then, the car has only covered about 500 miles and the engine is barely run in.
AAS is a delight to drive, overdrive on 3rd and 4th providing effortless motorway cruising. The triple carb set-up ensures power is delivered smoothly at all rev ranges from this engine which is virtually "unbustable".
If you are looking for a Big Healey to do some serious motoring, then this is the one.
