This is the first generation 3 series before the ubiquitous E30. These are now pretty rare in any form - principally due to rust - and the Baur is definitely the most desireable of them.
The Baur TC Cabriolet is a coachbuilt convertible and back of the hood folds down like a normal convertible but the front section pops out and is stowed in a rack in the boot. This leaves a t-bar structure.
Sold by BMW, but built by Baur on a standard car, it's not a full convertible. It's definitely not as pretty as a full convertible (never available on the E21) but it does have advantages:- no scuttle shake; full rear seat, and, roll over protection to name just a few.
The engine is the small six - a 2 litre straight 6 engine. It's carb rather than injection but it's never given me any problems and is perfectly reliable in use. It's not fast, but it is very smooth and plenty quick enough to use for what it's good at and it can more than keep up with modern traffic. It makes a lovely noise.
It runs and drives well, starts, stops and steers perfectly.
The bodywork, though not perfect is very presentable indeed and there is no rust requiring immediate attention. There are recent rust repairs carried out by a pevious owner and these appear to have been of good quality.
Mechanically, it's in fine order with recent exhaust and tyres and evidence of regular maintenance. It's on the standard 13" BBS cross spokes. I think I have a set of 14s and good tyres. I'll put them on.
The interior is clean, tidy and undamaged, but brown.
It's a very decent example of a rare enjoyable wee car. I think it's a bit of a bargain. It's rare, not rusty, it looks good, it drives well and it's convertible. What more do you want?
