BMW E28 M5, Stunning, Chassis #150 from 185 For Sale (1987) edit C112999 | | | This is a genuine E28 M5, handbuilt by BMW's Motorsport division in 1987. These UK spec cars were fitted with the incredible 3.5 litre straight six engine from the M1 supercar, and the resulting 286 bhp will get you to 60mph in 5.9 seconds and on up to150mph! The chassis number is 150, from the 185 sold in the UK. This particular example is one of very few left with the original chrome trim intact, as many of them were spec'd with the 'chrome delete' option, or have since been modified. It also has the original and stylish chrome bumpers. This car was also factory specified with blue buffalo hide interior, metal power sunroof, air conditioning, rear head restraints and sun blind. It has a full service history up to the present mileage.
I bought the car in 2006 (at 127k miles) and although solid, the paint and trim were showing signs of age and so I decided to subject it to a full stripdown restoration. Once the stripped shell had been fully prepared, it was professionally resprayed in the original BMW Cirrus metallic blue and the body cavities then 'waxoyled' to prevent future corrosion. In addition to the paintwork, a further £8000 was spent on the restoration. Most importantly (and you'll know this is an absolute must if you've researched E28 M5's) the timing chain was replaced, along with the runners, sprockets, gaskets etc. These timing chain parts were all genuine BMW and came to an eye watering £1100! Whilst the work was being done, the cylinder head was stripped and rebuilt and re-installed with a brand new head gasket.
Additional parts and work during the restoration:
Two new front wings
Professionally refurbished alloys
Five new Continental tyres
Set new Bilstein HD shock absorbers (Give a good ride quality, and amazing handling)
New front suspension 'wishbones', steering links, idler arms, drop links all with brand new bushes.

In short, if you're looking for an affordable classic which has already had all the work done then this car's the one. The agreed value insurance is set at £12,000 and costs me £180 per year, and just about all of the parts are still available through BMW or car spares outlets.
