This car was originally registered overseas (Australia) which goes a long way in explaining the excellent condition of the body structure and underside. Since its return to the UK in 1992 the car has had 3 former keepers, the last being my Uncle who purchased ‘Lewis’ from Autocats in Essex in February 1995. The car came into my possession last year and has been a much loved joy (was our wedding car) that I intended to keep for many years, however with the advent of a new child practicality dictates that I sell.
The car is very reliable and mechanically sound, having had thousands spent on it over the last 12 months. We drove it to Dublin earlier this year to be used at my brother’s wedding with no problem. The car drives effortlessly and handles beautifully with an extremely comfortable ride and the 3.8 litre engine ensures that it is not slow or underpowered.
It passed its last MOT on August 19th 2008 without incident and naturally as a registered historic vehicle it is tax exempt.
The car had power steering fitted by Autocats Jaguar in 1995.
Since it has been in my possession all works have been carried out by classic car specialists ‘Crawford & Son’ at Vines Cross, E Sussex. The garage was instructed to inspect the vehicle thoroughly and advise on any works that were needed to ensure safety, reliability, and future preservation. Listed below is some of the work undertaken.
Most rubber parts were perishing and therefore all rubber hoses, rod rubbers, mounts, bushes etc have been replaced. Steering Column refit, Front suspension overhaul with new front springs, New fan belt, Full service, Re-new front and rear windscreen rubbers and re-seal, New horn relay, Four brand new tyres, New rear lamp assemblies, Wheel inspections and loose spoke replacements, New rear calliper pistons and pads, New master cylinder, New steering rack and ball joints, Carburettors overhaul and refit. Underside clean and wax oil. This is just a brief summary of some of the major works, more information available on the invoices.
Mechanics
As previously stated this car is mechanically sound and reliable and has lots of money spent to ensure it stays this way with work being done on the brakes, suspension, steering, and carburettors (see above). It has done approximately 85,000 miles. To ensure consistent, easy and reliable start up the distributor has been replaced with a Pertronics ignition system and coil, along with this to facilitate better cold environment start up a choke by-pass switch was added. The engine is an excellent runner and has never smoked/overheated. The auto gearbox is faultless as is the steering column lever and the intermediate Speed Hold switch function is fully functional (operated by dashboard switch to obtain a downshift from direct to intermediate without depressing the accelerator pedal). The kick down function also works perfectly.
Interior
The interior is in great condition, the heater, radio, interior lights, horn, wipers, washer, indicators, fuel level gauge, oil pressure gauge, Ammeter, Revolution counter, Speedometer, headlamp warning light, fuel level warning light, indicator warning lights and brake fluid level warning light all work. The electric clock does not work (but hand adjuster does). The walnut dash is in excellent condition and the headlining and door cards are complete and undamaged. All door handles/window winders are fully operational. The seat adjusters work. Carpets in excellent condition (also has mats). The Rear leather seat is in excellent condition (as are picnic tables) but the front seats are worn and the leather is splitting.
Body and Paintwork
The Paintwork is factory finish and is generally in good condition showing a nice pattina of age, the car still presents well and polishes up nicely (was used at both my brother and my own wedding). The body structure is excellent and the underside is in excellent condition and will stay this way for many years as it has just been cleaned and professionally wax oiled.
Summary
This is a wonderful and cherished car that is a joy to drive and reliable. As you can see it has had a lot of quality work done on it in the last 12 months and will not disappoint. Viewing is highly recommended and welcomed.
